Like father, like son. Comparing siblings in 3D

Written by Peel Team

How Similar Are Siblings, really?

We’ve all heard the comment:

“Wow, you look just like your brother!”

But how accurate is that resemblance?

We put it to the test using 3D scanning technology.

We scanned two brothers, aged 26 and 30, who share the same parents. Using the Peel handheld 3D scanner, the goal was to compare their facial structures in detail.

Visualizing the Differences

Once scanned, we aligned both facial models in Peel 3D software using the best-fit alignment method. This minimized the distance between the two scans, allowing for a precise comparison.

We used a colormap to highlight subtle variations between the two faces.

 What stood out?

  • Son 1 had a more prominent eyebrow

  • A slightly longer nose

  • A narrower overall face shape

Takeaways: 3D Scanning Beyond Engineering

Aside from minor variances, the facial differences were within just 2mm, remarkably close. This allows us to quantify resemblance, not just assume it.

What started as a fun experiment demonstrated how 3D scanning can be used in unexpected ways:

  • Biometric comparison

  • Facial symmetry analysis

  • Personalized design or medical applications
